Yolks on you

We started physics this year, one of our experiments was on inertia.  Place an egg on a toilet paper roll, on top of a pie pan, over a glass of water.  Hit the pie pan with the palm of your hand with some force.  The pie pan and roll will fly away and the egg should fall gently into the water.  Our egg apparently did not want to fall gently into the water, and cracked itself onto the side of the glass and sat there, perfectly cracked.  The yolk rolled down into the water and made a lovely, gross looking mess.

Boo has been working on her hoomans.  She has started adding eyes in consistently, and even tried a new style of eye that wasn't just a circle.  She's very proud of her hoomans, and gives them to everyone she knows.  Every now and then she fusses because she wants me to draw her mermaibs still, but hopefully she'll learn to draw tails soon enough.

We took the kids to the splash pad this Saturday for our weekly family outing.  Ro-bear and Boo pretty much refused to get wet, but they played at the park and had a blast with Daddy on the swings.

Everyone was hard at work drawing or reading when I started to take this picture, then suddenly Ro-bear is up on the desk.  I don't remember what she was doing, but she wasn't really throwing something. That's what it looks like to me though.

Boo woke up on Monday evening with a bad fever and I finally got her to sleep on the couch.  When she woke up the next morning she was on the couch and the cat was on her pillow. She says Moom, Tammy stoled my pillow."

Ro-bear and Boo have been playing with the sprinkler in the evenings.  Ro-bear doesn't actually like to get wet, so she takes the umbrella from the sand table and uses it to shield herself from the water.  When she wanders off and I threaten to turn the water off, she runs back in with her umbrella shield.

Ro-bear loves her play-aways from the library.  This week she got out a Sid the Science Kid about Motion, which just happens to be what L-bear is studying in science.

This week has been nice and slow and steady, besides having some sick babies it was an overall pleasant week.

L-bear is so looking forward her birthday so much that it is all we hear about right now.  Just one week and two days before we can stop hearing about it for another year.  She's having a sleep over for her party this year with two of her friends, so I can't blame her for being too excited.

That's about all here around the Blue Rabbit Academy, I hope this week has been a good one for you and I hope to see you back soon.

Still getting into the swing of things

While the weather is still nice we have been trying to go to the park every weekend as a whole family.  Most weekends we've chosen to go to Warrior's Path State Park.  Boo was actually pushing Daddy in the swing: he sat down just to be silly and she started pushing like a trooper.  After he stopped laughing so hard, he thanked her and told her he was good.  Ro-bear wouldn't switch spots with me, I asked nicely and she said no flat out.

L-bear doing a science experiment on inertia.  She looks so thrilled in this photo, but in true she had tried a good ten times already to get the notecard out from under the coins.  I'd managed to do it once myself, but she didn't figure that it counts until she's done it herself.  If I could have gotten a picture of her face when it finally worked it would have been precious, but I'd already set down the camera. She finally got to see the coins hover in midair for a fraction of a second before splashing down with a plop.

We have had a subscription to the Green Kids Craft box for a while now, and this was one of their favorite crafts so far. They got to make a tidal bottle with little balloon fish inside.  If you have one or two kids of a similar age I'd recommend the Green Kids Box, but we have three kids and a four year age gap.  We've unsubscribed for now because Boo felt left out and L-bug felt too old for roughly half the activities.  We're going to give Little Passports a try and see if everyone can have fun with that subscription box.  I have nothing bad to say about Green Kids though, its a lovely idea and once L-bug has totally outgrown it we may go back and get a box just for the younger two to complete.

L-bear has gotten into bread making.  She loves the kneading aspect.  She made tortillas for dinner one night. She bailed on me for all the rolling pin work (traitor), but she loved the mixing and kneading.  Ro-bear quite likes punching the bread, as seen above.

On national s'more day, we got creative and cooked marshmallows over the hot stove after my tea pot boiled.

In other news without pictures, L-bug and I tried staying up for the meteor shower last week. We managed to stay up until 12:30 and then got up at 4 and saw a total of 7 meteors and watched all of Mulan in between trips outside to check on meteors.
We also made a trip up to Cincinnati for my mother's birthday.  We went to East Fork Lake and had a blast collecting rocks, losing fossils and shells.  I'm not sure we ended up with any fossils or shells in the end, everyone we touched seemed to fall straight back into the lovely brown water.

I worked on some bows for our sister blog/Etsy shop for the upcoming Halloween season.  They will be up and coming soon at the Blue Rabbit Cottage.

We managed to stop by a see a friend from college.  L-bug got to play a game of Splendor with dad and uncle Kenny. She was a very happy camper and only lost by 3 points.  Splendor is one of her new favorite games.

We've still been managing to go to the library pre-school program.  Boo and Ro-bear love the stories and have a little friend they look forward to seeing all week.

This isn't the best picture, but L-bear and one of her best friends were being very silly at dance yesterday.  Some pool noodles were sitting around and they decided to have a noodle fight. Yesterday was one of those days that makes a mom want to throw in the towel and ship her children off to a boarding school.  Two out of three were contrary in everything they did, and as the day wore on I found I'd run out of patience.  The only thing that made me feel better was to get to gym for dance and find out that almost every child in the entire city (or at least those at the gym) were in the exact same mood.  Was it something in the air? The water? or a full moon? No idea but I am so thankful to say that we did not have any issues today, so it was a 24 hour bad mood bug.

Today we managed to get all of our work done before lunch and met some friends at the splash pad for some relaxation time.  I got to talk to another mom and the kids got to run around and be monkeys.  It was a much needed break for everyone all around.

Our last bit of exciting news for this week was Boo has learned how to draw people, or as she says 'hoomans.' She just picked up a crayon yesterday and was suddenly able to draw people with heads, bodies, hair and eyes. I was surprised and impressed at the same time.  She did fuss at me for these pictures though because the hooman wasn't finished yet.

We are truly getting into the swing of things here at the Blue Rabbit Academy, and I'm glad you stopped by to visit.  Have a blessed day and come back soon.

First week of 2015-16

This year L-bug is working on fourth grade. Ro-Bear has started Kindergarten, or at least that's what she's calling it, really she's still pre-school level, but it makes her feel better to say she's in Kindergarten. Boo is really just tagging along for the ride, but wanted her picture with a sign, so pre-K it is.  L-bug is still using a mix of The Well Trained Mind and Ambleside online.  Ro-bear is using the same "year .5" that L used when she was 4, save science. I switched in Mudpies instead of Science 4 Kids.

For our first art drawing lesson this year Boo wanted us to draw "mermaibs," so we looked up a tutorial on mermaids.  We weren't too thrilled with our results, but it was user error. The tutorial was fine, I guess we're just that out of practice with drawing.

This week for history we have made it up to the third chapter in SOW volume 4 and the only activity we were interested in so far was making nan.  L-bear did 99% of the work herself.  While I will say this nan was nothing like the naan I've had before it was a really delightful bread. L was so proud of having made it as well.

This picture is so funny because I caught Ro mid punch.  She got quite a kick out of punching the dough as sissy kneaded it.  Also funny was L-bug singing- I need you to 'knead' me.  She finished singing and says, "get it, the bread is singing."

We used her bread for BLTs with out first beefsteak tomato of the year out of our garden. It was quite a remarkable sandwich.

This summer I had bought the girls some bathtub paints from Target, and totally forgot.  I found them in the art closet this week and let the girls paint.  The girls had a blast.  Ro-bear and Boo even climbed in the tub again today, and while I was warming up the water they had already mixed up three different shades of purple and painted half of themselves and the tub. I couldn't get pictures that time, however, I'd left my camera in another room.

Our first folk song this year is Kookaburra and while L already knew most of the words, she loves this song and is working very hard to get Ro to sing it in a round with her.  Ro can't quite wrap her mind around a round though, so they are still practicing.  L loves this song so much she decorated our white board with kookaburra and a confused kangaroo one day.  Not sure why there's a kangaroo, maybe that's why he's confused- he can't figure out why he's in the picture either.

L's still going strong in her gymnastics and hip hop, she's still taking ballet, but it isn't her favorite. Her best friend just dropped ballet, so I have a feeling L will want to drop it soon.  Ro has started trying ballet and hip hop. She likes ballet much more, but I think she likes being with big sis enough to take hip hop.

Random cute story: Boo has been listening along with Ro-bear to the reading book. One morning she looks at me and says "I know a says ah, now I can READ!"

We have already dropped a book this year.  I feel a little guilty, like I'm teaching my daughter bad habits, but there are so many books out there that we're missing by spending time on Robinson Crusoe. We both found him to be a bit whiny, so we gave up for now and moved on to The Secret Garden.  We also started reading The Fellowship of the Rings as a free read, but keep running out of free time.  If any of my lovely readers have an option on old Robinson let me know, because I'd love to know whether you think we're doing okay dropping him, or if we should pick him back up at a later point.  I've never read the book myself, so I'm really not sure which is best for us.
